To understand a poem you must, well there is no real set way to do this for the most part you just have to come up with your own meaning of the poem using the way it relates to you.
So remember that when you are looking for the meaning of a poem don’t ask the teacher or a friend just ask your self what does this poem mean to me.

The phoenix is a sign
A sign of new life
A sign of rebirth
Eternal life
All these things have some thing in common
They all deal with life and death
Which is a serious matter
Your life may seem very insignificant
But
It is your life, and your decision may change the world
